DCPS NAMES FIRST FULL-SERVICE SCHOOLS COMMUNITY COORDINATOR
Owensboro, KY- Daviess County Public Schools is proud to announce that Sonya Simpson has been named the
first, Full-Service Schools Community Coordinator. This position has been newly created within the district based on
a five year grant totaling around $1.5 million from The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence.
Simpson has currently been serving as the principal at East View Elementary since 2015. She began her career as a
6th grade science teacher at Burns Middle School in 1998. She was in the classroom until 2004 and served as the
Instructional Coach for a year. She then moved to East View Elementary to the role of Assistant Principal for seven
years until 2012. Ms. Simpson also served as the Meadow Lands Elementary Assistant Principal from 2012-2015.
Simpson graduated from Western Kentucky University in 2002 with a master of arts degree in education and earned
her Rank 1 in Education Administration from Western Kentucky University in 2005. She received her bachelor of arts
degree in middle school education from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1997 and is a 1991 graduate of Daviess
County High School. She has earned her certifications in the areas of counseling, principalship, and
superintendency.
Daviess County Public Schools has chosen to house Simpson position’s on the Burns School campuses including
the elementary and the middle school. With their proximity in closeness to one another, Simpson will be able to make
the most impact in rolling out the initiatives.
In her new position, Simpson will coordinate the full service community schools grant that provides an insulated
educational pipeline including:

• High-quality early childhood education programs.
• High-quality school and out-of-school-time programs and strategies.
• Support for a child’s transition to elementary school, from elementary to middle school, from middle to
high school, from high school into post-secondary education and into the workforce, including any
comprehensive readiness assessments determined necessary.
• Family and community engagement and support, which may include engaging or supporting families
at school or at home.
• Activities that support postsecondary and workforce readiness, which may include job training,
internship opportunities, and career counseling.
• Community-based support for students who have attended the schools in the area serviced by the
pipeline, or students who are members of the community, facilitating their continued connection to the
community and success in post-secondary education and the workforce.
• Social, health, nutrition, and mental health services and, supports.
• Juvenile crime prevention and rehabilitation programs.

Her work will focus over the course of the five year grant will be 3 quality pipeline services in these schools and
strengthen them while also adding 2 additional services. Simpson will work closely with the school specific Family
Resource Youth Service Center coordinators and district wide coordinators as well.
