It’s another fantastic Friday in the Foxes’ Den! We are off to a great start for the school year. I am inspired by the curiosity and enthusiasm of our students. Our teachers spent the summer learning new structures and strategies to increase engagement (and fun) in our classrooms. I’ve seen our students enjoying the rewards of this instructional focus that not only increases their engagement but also focuses on building the important social skills they need to be kind, responsible, and respectful students and adults.
I’ve been particularly impressed by the way our students are engaging with our new students. Many of you may not know that this year we have welcomed the DCPS Middle School Newcomer Program to Burns Middle School. Formerly located at College View Middle School, the Newcomer Program is an intensive language support program for students who recently moved to the United States. These students attend part of their day with the rest of our students and part of their day is spent focussing on learning English. Our Foxes have welcomed them by quickly finding ways to help the students learn about our school and our daily practices.
Our seasons are off to a great start! Our volleyball teams played three games this week and our cross-country team will run tomorrow in Hopkinsville. Tomorrow, Saturday, August 19th we will host the Fox Bowl–a two-game football tournament beginning at 9:00 am. What a great weekend chance to see our football, cheer, and dance teams back in action!
As our district begins to rely on our new communication tools, be sure to look at your communications through Talking Points as well as our website. We will begin updating our lunch menu on our website each week on Fridays as well. Thank you for helping to make this the Best Year at Burns for our students! We can’t wait to see our Foxes back in the Den next week!
